Getting to Know You: FK Qarabagh

The second qualifying round of the UEFA Champions League is underway, and we’ve already had some cracking games. Celtic has moved on to the 3rd round, as have some other big clubs like Maccabi Tel Aviv, Partizan Belgrade and Dinamo Zagreb. But another club with a far tinier profile on the European stage moved on as well, and they’re worth a mention.

FK Qarabağ was founded on July 23, 1951, making today the club’s 63rd birthday. And what a way to celebrate. With a 4-0 win over Valletta FC of Malta in a packed Tofiq Bahramov Stadium, making 5-0 on aggregate, they are in their first-ever 3rd qualifying round of the Champions League. In fact, though they have won the Ajerbaijani Premier League twice in their history, this is their first time in any sort of qualifying for the European Cup or Champions League.

Here’s how they did it. Check out the turn and flick on that first goal. Smooth. The celebration dance is not too shabby either.

Qarabağ will be moving on to face Salzburg of Austria (whose full name will not be uttered here), for a trip to the playoff round. The odds are stacked against them, but I for one will be rooting for the Horsemen, as they are known, to make a little history for themselves and for Azerbaijan.
